Subject: Results of UBE experiment.

First I created a brand new account, one that had never been used before.

Then I posted a handful of messages to a randomly selected group. I involved myself in the discussion, for a while.

Then I stopped.

Then I sat back and waited.

I won't spam you with the actual messages, but here's what I got. I've deleted the half dozen real responses to my postings. You will notice that the second weekend after my experiment I received 20 unsolicited messages over those two days. If the account had been at an online service with a limited mailbox it would probably have been bouncing mail by then, without my new net user ever having a chance to send in a "remove" message.

Adam Hirsch said that hiding your name was like giving in to terrorism, except that instead of a bullet through the head you got mail. I'm sorry, but the chances of getting killed by a terrorist even in a place like Israel are at worst on the same order as the chance of getting killed in an auto accident.

But the chance of getting hit by unsolicited bulk email is 100%.

It's simply not reasonable to expect people to put up with getting ten times the volume of UBE (and yes, it's unsolicited. Posting a message to news doesn't constitute a solicitation for people to flame at me about the latest MLM scam) as real mail. Look at all the different addresses I got mail from... each one with a separate remove list. Even if they ALL had working remove lists it wouldn't have reduced the volume of junk significantly.

UBE behaviour is destructive to the net. It reduces the ability of people to communicate. It has a chilling effect on free speech, as people simply refuse to involve themselves in the free exchange of ideas rather than get it.

Please reconsider your position. Your proposed solution is clearly unworkable, based on this sample of UBE... the number of places that do repeat bulk mail under the same name is much smaller than the one-shots, so what good does a remove list do?
